The experience
A private journey, thoughtfully paced
Under a football field in Kasukabe, Saitama, is a hall 177 metres long and 25 metres high held up by 59 concrete pillars, each weighing 500 tonnes. It is the pressure tank of the Metropolitan Area Outer Underground Discharge Channel, the biggest flood-control tunnel on earth, and when the rivers rise it swallows the water that would otherwise flood Tokyo. The rest of the time you can walk in it. The Japanese call it the Underground Temple, and it appears in more films and games than any other structure in the country.
We collect you at your Tokyo hotel and drive an hour north. The official tour takes you down 100 steps into the tank, where your guide translates the engineer’s explanation and gives you time for photographs; it is one of the most extraordinary man-made spaces you will ever stand in.
After lunch we drive to Kawagoe, the merchant town that kept its Edo-period warehouses when Tokyo’s burned. We walk the Kurazukuri street of black-plaster storehouses, hear the Toki no Kane bell tower that has told the time since the 1600s, try sweets in Kashiya Yokocho candy alley and visit Kitain temple with its 538 stone Rakan statues, every face different. We are back in Tokyo in the early evening.
What you pay is what you pay
The price is one fixed amount for your whole group: the private van, fuel, tolls, parking and your driver-guide for the day. There are no per-person supplements and no booking fees. The tunnel tour ticket, Kitain entry and lunch are paid by each guest on the day.
Good to know
The tunnel tour must be reserved in advance and runs on fixed times, mostly weekdays; we book it for you as soon as you reserve. During and after heavy rain the tank is in use and tours are cancelled – if that happens on your date you can choose a Kawagoe-and-Omiya day instead or a full refund.

Said plainly
The tunnel tour has about 100 steps down and up with no lift, and the floor can be wet; wear flat shoes. Children under primary-school age are not admitted to the tank. Tours are cancelled when the channel is in use after heavy rain; in that case you can switch to a Kawagoe and Omiya day or take a full refund - your choice. Entry fees and lunch are paid by you on the day. Pickup and drop-off can be changed on request at no extra cost. Travelling with small children? Tell us their ages when booking and we will confirm the child-seat arrangement for your date.
