The experience

A private journey, thoughtfully paced

Tokoname is one of the Six Ancient Kilns of Japan, with pottery made here for about 900 years. Arimatsu, on the old Tokaido road, has made shibori, Japanese tie-dyed cloth, since the early 1600s. This trip combines both crafts.

On Day 1 we pick you up at your hotel in central Tokyo and drive west, about 4.5 hours, to Tokoname on the Chita Peninsula. In the afternoon we walk the Tokoname Pottery Footpath. Narrow lanes wind between brick chimneys and old kilns, and the walls are built with old clay pipes and bottles. You pass small pottery studios and shops, and the large maneki-neko lucky cat that watches over the town. You stay overnight in the Tokoname area.

On Day 2 we drive to Arimatsu in Nagoya. The old street is lined with large merchant houses from the Edo period. At the Arimatsu Shibori Museum you see how artisans tie thousands of tiny knots in cloth before dyeing. Then you join a shibori workshop. You tie and dye your own handkerchief to take home. Museum entry and the workshop fee are included.

After lunch we drive back to Tokyo, arriving at your hotel in the evening.

This is a private tour. Only your group. One group per van, for 1 to 6 people.

If the workshop is closed on your date, you can take a full refund of your booking, guaranteed.
