From Tokyo: Shizuoka Plastic Models Customizable Tour

Shizuoka city is the capital of plastic models in Japan. Big model makers are based here, and most Gundam plastic models, called Gunpla, are made at the Bandai Hobby Center in Shizuoka. This about 10 hour day trip is for model fans of all ages.

The Bandai Hobby Center Plamo Design Industrial Institute Museum shows how Gunpla are designed and made, from the first drawing to the plastic runner. Your timed ticket is included. Your guide helps you understand the Japanese displays.

Then we visit Shizuoka Hobby Square near Shizuoka Station, with displays and shops of local model makers. After that we walk in Sunpu Castle Park, where the first Tokugawa shogun, Ieyasu, spent his last years. You can see the rebuilt corner turret and the moat.

Lunch is not included. Shizuoka has good local food, such as Shizuoka oden. The drive from Tokyo takes about 2.5 hours each way, and on clear days you can see Mount Fuji from the expressway. Model kits are often cheaper and easier to find here than in other cities, so bring space in your bag.
