The experience
A private journey, thoughtfully paced
In October 1600, two great armies met in a narrow valley at Sekigahara. Tokugawa Ieyasu won, and his family ruled Japan for the next 260 years. This 2-day private trip from Tokyo takes you onto the battlefield, with time to understand what happened and where.
The Gifu Sekigahara Battlefield Memorial Museum is a modern museum near the field. A large film and clear displays explain the armies, the commanders and the turn of the battle. From the top floor you can see the whole valley.
Then you visit the battlefield itself. Stone markers and flags show the camps of each commander. You see the final camp of Ieyasu, the hill where Ishida Mitsunari led the western army, and the place where the main fighting took place. Your guide tells the story as you stand in each spot.
Ogaki Castle was the base of the western army before the battle. The rebuilt keep is a museum with armour, weapons and battle history. The town around it has canals and old streets.
We stay one night near Sekigahara so the battlefield walk is not rushed.
Your driver-guide meets you in the lobby of your hotel in central Tokyo. The van has room for your luggage, and we stop at expressway rest areas for toilets, snacks and coffee. Times in the plan below are a guide and can shift a little with traffic.
This is a private tour. Only your group. Your driver-guide speaks English, and also Hindi and Urdu.
If the battlefield museum is closed on your date, you can take a full refund of your booking, guaranteed.
