Oya Cave & Utsunomiya Gyoza - Private Day Tour from Tokyo
Walk through a vast underground stone city, see Japan's oldest cliff-carved Buddha and eat the country's most famous gyoza. A Tochigi day nobody else offers. One fixed price per group.
Road-day snapshot
This is your private day, so the route is flexible: tell us if you want to skip a stop, stay longer somewhere or add a place nearby.
The experience
A private journey, thoughtfully paced
Nikko gets the tour buses. Twenty minutes south, the town of Oya keeps something stranger: a cathedral-sized cavern hollowed out of the hillside by 70 years of stone quarrying, and cliffs where monks carved Buddhas twelve centuries ago. Almost no foreign visitors know it exists.
We collect you at your Tokyo hotel and drive north for about two hours. The first stop is the Oya History Museum, where a staircase drops you into 20,000 square metres of underground halls cut from Oya stone, the soft volcanic rock that Frank Lloyd Wright used for the Imperial Hotel. It is 8 degrees inside all year, the light is dim and the ceilings are 30 metres high; concerts and film shoots happen down here. Your guide explains how the stone was cut by hand and later by machine, and where to stand for the best photographs.
Next door is Oya-ji, a temple built into the cliff face. Its Senju Kannon was carved into the rock around the year 810 and is the oldest stone Buddha in Japan; beside the temple the 27-metre Peace Kannon looks out over the valley. We stop for coffee in a cafe built inside a quarry pit before driving into Utsunomiya.
Utsunomiya is Japan’s gyoza capital, with more than 200 dumpling shops and its own gyoza statue outside the station. Your guide takes you to a local favourite for lunch, then we visit Futaarayama Shrine on its hill above the main street. If the day allows we add Wakayama Farm, a bamboo grove you can walk through, on the way home.
What you pay is what you pay
The price is one fixed amount for your whole group: the private van, fuel, tolls, parking and your driver-guide for the day. There are no per-person supplements and no booking fees. Museum and temple entry and your gyoza lunch are paid by each guest on the day and come to about 2,000 yen per person.
Good to know
The underground museum is cold – bring a jacket even in August. The floor is uneven in places. The museum closes on Tuesdays from December to March; if it is closed on your date we tell you before you book.
Flexible day
This is your private tour, so the day is flexible. If you want to skip a stop, stay longer somewhere or add a place nearby, write it in the booking notes or tell your driver-guide on the day and we will adjust the route where time allows.
