The experience
A private journey, thoughtfully paced
Owara Kaze-no-Bon is held every year from September 1 to 3 in Etchu Yatsuo, an old hill town in Toyama. Dancers in straw hats move slowly through the narrow streets, to the sad sound of the kokyu fiddle, shamisen and song. It is one of the most beautiful and quiet festivals in Japan. This private 2-day trip from Tokyo takes you there on one festival night.
You arrive in the afternoon and walk the old town of Yatsuo, with stone walls, slopes and wooden houses. Paper lanterns line the streets.
As evening comes, dance groups from each district start to move through their streets. There is no ticket: viewing on the street is free. Your guide helps you find good places and explains the dance and the songs. The dancing goes on late into the night.
After the dance we drive to your hotel in Toyama city. The next day we drive back to Tokyo.
Departures are only on festival dates: September 1, 2 or 3.
Your driver-guide meets you in the lobby of your hotel in central Tokyo. The van has room for your luggage, and we stop at expressway rest areas for toilets, snacks and coffee. Times in the plan below are a guide and can shift a little with traffic.

DAY 1 Morning pickup in Tokyo and drive to Etchu Yatsuo (about 5 hours). Afternoon walk in the old town, then Owara Kaze-no-Bon dancing in the evening. Late drive to your hotel in Toyama city.

This tour runs only on September 1, 2 and 3. Street viewing is free, so no tickets are needed The town is very crowded on festival nights. Expect standing and walking on slopes. Do not use flash when taking photos of the dancers Hotels near Yatsuo are very limited at festival time.
