The experience
A private journey, thoughtfully paced
Okazaki in Aichi is the town where Tokugawa Ieyasu was born in 1543. He later united Japan and his family ruled for more than 250 years. This 2-day private trip takes you from Tokyo to the places of his early life, and to a food that has been made here for centuries: Hatcho miso.
Okazaki Castle stands in a green park by the river. The keep is a museum about the castle and the Tokugawa family. In the park you can see the well said to have given water for the baby Ieyasu's first bath.
Hatcho miso is a dark, rich miso made only from soybeans, salt and water. It ages for about two years in large cedar barrels, pressed down by piles of river stones. In Hatcho village, a short walk from the castle, you visit a brewery, see the old barrels and taste the miso.
Daijuji is the family temple of the Matsudaira clan, Ieyasu's ancestors. It holds the memorial tablets of the Tokugawa shoguns. From the temple gate there is a straight view to Okazaki Castle, kept clear on purpose for hundreds of years.
Day trips from Tokyo are too short for this area. With one night in Okazaki you have time to walk, eat and see each place without a rush.
Your driver-guide meets you in the lobby of your hotel in central Tokyo. The van has room for your luggage, and we stop at expressway rest areas for toilets, snacks and coffee. Times in the plan below are a guide and can shift a little with traffic.
This is a private tour. Only your group. Your driver-guide speaks English, and also Hindi and Urdu.
If the brewery or castle is closed on your date, you can take a full refund of your booking, guaranteed.
DAY 1 Morning pickup in Tokyo and drive to Okazaki (about 4 hours). Afternoon at Okazaki Castle and its park. Evening free in Okazaki.
DAY 2 Hatcho miso brewery visit and tasting, then Daijuji Temple. Afternoon drive back to your Tokyo hotel.
