The experience
A private journey, thoughtfully paced
In the 1850s, with foreign warships arriving, Japan needed iron cannon. At Nirayama in Izu, local official Egawa Hidetatsu built a furnace to cast them. It still stands, and in 2015 it became part of the UNESCO site for Japan's Meiji Industrial Revolution.
The furnace: Tall brick chimneys in a field, with a guidance centre that explains how they worked and why they mattered.
The Egawa house: Nearby is the Egawa family residence, a large old house with a huge timber roof, tied to the same story.
The countryside: We finish in the farmland and small towns of northern Izu, with time for lunch and a stop at a local shrine or strawberry farm in season.
This is a private tour. Only your group in the vehicle.
