The experience
A private journey, thoughtfully paced
The Mogami river runs through Yamagata to the Sea of Japan. It was the road that carried rice to the coast, and Basho wrote one of his most famous poems about its fast water.
DAY 1. The drive north. In the afternoon we ride a Mogami river boat through the gorge, with the boatman singing old river songs.
DAY 2. Sakata, the old rice port, with the Sankyo Soko warehouses under their zelkova trees and the merchant house of the Homma family. Then the drive back to Tokyo.
This is a private tour. Only your group.
River boats can stop in high water. If the boat does not run on your date, you can take a full refund of your booking, guaranteed.
