Road-day snapshot

This is your private day, so the route is flexible: tell us if you want to skip a stop, stay longer somewhere or add a place nearby.

The experience

A private journey, thoughtfully paced

Kanazawa has Kenrokuen, Okayama has Korakuen, and Mito has Kairakuen – the third of Japan’s three great landscape gardens, and the only one an easy day from Tokyo. It was built by the lord of Mito in 1842 with 3,000 plum trees and opened to the townspeople, which is what its name means: a garden to enjoy together. Most foreign visitors go to the other two and never hear of it.

We collect you at your Tokyo hotel and drive an hour and a half north-east. Kairakuen sits above Lake Senba: the plum grove, the bamboo and cedar forest, the Kobuntei villa with its three storeys of tatami rooms and a view over the lake from the top, and the spring where the lord’s tea water came from. In February and March the plum festival fills the grove with blossom; in other months it is quiet and green.

Across town is the Kodokan, the samurai school the same lord built in 1841 – the largest of its kind in Japan, with halls for the classics, medicine, astronomy and sword practice. Tokugawa Yoshinobu, the last shogun, studied here as a boy and lived here after he surrendered. The white-walled buildings and gardens are intact.

Lunch is Mito’s own dish: natto, fermented soybeans, which the town has made since the 1880s – your guide finds it for the brave and something else for everyone else. In the afternoon we walk Lake Senba’s promenade with its black swans and, if the day allows, visit the Art Tower Mito, the twisting titanium tower you can go up, before driving back to Tokyo.

What you pay is what you pay

The price is one fixed amount for your whole group: the private van, fuel, tolls, parking and your driver-guide for the day. There are no per-person supplements and no booking fees. Kairakuen, Kobuntei and Kodokan entry tickets are included for everyone in your group. Lunch is optional and paid by each guest on the day.

Good to know

The plum festival runs from about 10 February to mid March and is the busiest season; the garden is at its quietest and greenest in May and June. Kobuntei’s upper floors are reached by steep stairs. Mito is flat and easy walking otherwise.
