Road-day snapshot

Matsumoto is roughly three hours each way from central Tokyo. Expect about twelve hours door to door. The castle is visited first to beat the midday crowds.

The experience

A private journey, thoughtfully paced

Leave central Tokyo early in a private, air-conditioned van for Matsumoto. Enter the preserved wooden keep of Matsumoto Castle, one of the few original castles in Japan, with standard admission included for your group. Then walk Nakamachi, where black-and-white merchant storehouses now hold small galleries, craft shops and cafes.

Your driver-guide leads a relaxed walk focused on local materials and design, and you browse at your own pace. This is our longest day tour: about twelve hours door to door.

Choose with confidence

Is this the right journey for your group?

Excellent fit if

  • History lovers who want to enter a genuine original castle
  • Guests interested in Japanese craft, design and architecture
  • Travellers happy with a long, rewarding road day

Consider another option if

  • Steep, narrow castle stairs are a problem for someone in your group (the grounds are still enjoyable)
  • You want a shorter day closer to Tokyo

Said plainly

Castle entry can queue on weekends and holidays. Paid workshops and special exhibitions in Nakamachi are optional and not part of the itinerary. The order of stops may change for traffic, weather or temporary closures.

How hard are the castle stairs?

Steep and narrow, as in the original. Anyone who prefers not to climb can enjoy the grounds and outer views while the rest of the group goes inside.

Why such an early start?
