The experience
A private journey, thoughtfully paced
Kirigamine is a wide, rolling plateau in central Nagano at around 1,600 to 1,900 metres. Unlike most Japanese mountains it is open grassland, with high wetlands, summer wildflowers and views to the Northern, Central and Southern Alps.
THE WALK. We walk the boardwalk around Yashimagahara wetland and, if you like, up Kurumayama for the widest view. The walking is easy to moderate.
THE ROAD. The Venus Line road crosses the plateau and is one of Japan's great mountain drives.
We stop at Lake Suwa on the way back.
This is a long day, around 12 hours. This is a private tour. Only your group in the vehicle.
The high road closes in winter. In winter we will tell you before the tour which part of the plateau is open.
