The experience
A private journey, thoughtfully paced
Katakai is a small town in Ojiya, Niigata. Every year on September 9 and 10 it holds a fireworks festival as an offering to its shrine. The highlight is the 4-shaku shell, a huge firework about 120 cm wide that bursts into a ball of light about 800 m across. It was long known as one of the largest fireworks shells in the world. Many shells carry messages from local families, read out before each launch.
On Day 1 we pick you up at your hotel in central Tokyo and drive north to Ojiya, about 3 hours. In the afternoon we visit Nishikigoi no Sato, the Ojiya center for the colorful koi that were first bred in these hills. Entry is included. Then we go to Katakai early to walk the festival streets and the shrine, before taking your reserved seat. The seat fee is included. The fireworks run through the evening, with the 4-shaku shell near the end. After the show we drive to your hotel in the Ojiya or Nagaoka area.
On Day 2 you have a slow morning. We drive into the Yamakoshi hills to see rice terraces and koi ponds, then stop for lunch in the area. After lunch we drive back to Tokyo and reach your hotel in the evening.
This tour runs only on the festival dates.
This is a private tour. Only your group. One group per van, for 1 to 6 people.
If the fireworks are cancelled on your date, you can take a full refund of your booking, guaranteed.
