Road-day snapshot

This is your private day, so the route is flexible: tell us if you want to skip a stop, stay longer somewhere or add a place nearby.

The experience

A private journey, thoughtfully paced

Fushimi Inari in Kyoto has the tourists. Kasama Inari, ninety minutes from Tokyo, is counted with it as one of the three great Inari shrines of Japan, and on an ordinary weekday you may share it with a few dozen people and a lot of foxes. Around it is a town that has made pottery for 250 years.

We collect you at your Tokyo hotel and drive north-east into Ibaraki. Kasama Inari Shrine was founded in 651; its approach street is lined with shops selling inari sushi, its main hall is carved with dragons and its 400-year-old wisteria is a national monument that flowers in May. Your guide explains the fox messengers and how to make a wish the local way.

Then the pottery. Kasama-yaki is a rustic ware, heavier and freer than Kyoto porcelain, and the town has more than 200 working kilns. At a studio in the Geijutsu no Mori (Art Forest) park you paint or carve your own cup or plate under a potter’s eye; it is fired and posted to your hotel, or to your home address, a few weeks later. The park itself has the Ibaraki Ceramic Art Museum, a sculpture trail in the woods and a good lunch cafe. The Kasama Craft Hills shops next door sell work from a hundred local potters.

If the day allows we add the Kasama Nichido Museum, a small gallery of Western and Japanese painting with a palette collection, before the drive back to Tokyo.

What you pay is what you pay

The price is one fixed amount for your whole group: the private van, fuel, tolls, parking and your driver-guide for the day. There are no per-person supplements and no booking fees. The pottery workshop (about 2,000-3,000 yen per person including firing; postage extra), museum entries and your lunch are paid by each guest on the day. The shrine is free.

Good to know

Pottery pieces are fired after your visit and delivered in 3-5 weeks; international postage is possible for most countries. The Art Forest museums close on Mondays. Kasama’s chrysanthemum festival runs late October to November and the wisteria flowers in early May.
