The experience
A private journey, thoughtfully paced
Handa, on the Chita Peninsula in Aichi, is the home of Mizkan, a vinegar maker since 1804. Vinegar from Handa helped make Edo-style sushi popular. This 2-day private trip from Tokyo explores this small food town and the coast around it.
The Mizkan Museum shows how vinegar is made and how it travelled by ship to Edo. You see a full-size wooden cargo ship, learn the history of sushi, and try simple hands-on displays. Visits are by reservation, which we make for you.
Outside, the Handa Canal is lined with black wooden warehouses, a classic sight of this old port. Nearby is the Handa Red Brick Building, a beer factory from 1898, one of the largest brick buildings left from that time.
On day 2 we drive along the Chita Peninsula to Tokoname, one of Japan's old pottery towns. The Pottery Footpath winds past old kilns, chimneys and walls made of clay pipes.
This is a slow, friendly trip for people who love food and quiet towns.
Your driver-guide meets you in the lobby of your hotel in central Tokyo. The van has room for your luggage, and we stop at expressway rest areas for toilets, snacks and coffee. Times in the plan below are a guide and can shift a little with traffic.
This is a private tour. Only your group. Your driver-guide speaks English, and also Hindi and Urdu.
If the museum is closed on your date, you can take a full refund of your booking, guaranteed.
DAY 1 Morning pickup in Tokyo and drive to Handa (about 4 hours 30 minutes). Afternoon at the Mizkan Museum and a walk by the canal. Evening free in Handa.
DAY 2 Morning at the Handa Red Brick Building, then the Pottery Footpath in Tokoname. Afternoon drive back to your Tokyo hotel.
