The experience
A private journey, thoughtfully paced
Ibaraki is the prefecture next to Tokyo that tourists forget, and it holds two of the most photographed sights in eastern Japan. We put them together in one private day.
We collect you at your Tokyo hotel and drive an hour north-east to Ushiku. The Ushiku Daibutsu is 120 metres tall – three times the Statue of Liberty – and was the tallest statue in the world when it was finished in 1993. You walk through the garden, take the lift up inside the statue to the observation windows at 85 metres, and on a clear day see Mount Fuji and the Tokyo skyline from inside the Buddha’s chest.
From there we drive to the coast. Oarai Isosaki Shrine has stood above the Pacific for 1,100 years, and its Kamiiso torii gate stands alone on a rock in the surf; the waves breaking around it are one of the classic images of Japan. Lunch is at Nakaminato Fish Market next door, where the boats land and the sushi counters serve what came in that morning.
In the afternoon the choice is yours. Hitachi Seaside Park is open all year: the hill turns blue with nemophila from late April to mid May and red with kochia in October, and the gardens, dunes and cycling paths are there in every season. If you prefer, we walk the long sand beach at Oarai and stop at the Oarai fish market for grilled shellfish before the drive home. You choose on the day.
What you pay is what you pay
The price is one fixed amount for your whole group: the private van, fuel, tolls, parking and your driver-guide for the day. There are no per-person supplements and no booking fees. Buddha entry and Hitachi Seaside Park entry tickets are included in the price. Lunch is optional – bring your own or buy at the fish market.
Good to know
The torii is best photographed in the morning with the sun behind you; we time the day around it. Hitachi Seaside Park is extremely busy on nemophila weekends – a weekday is far better.

The seaside is windy - bring a light jacket. Hitachi Seaside Park is open all year (flower peaks: late April to mid May for nemophila, mid October for kochia). If you prefer, we spend the afternoon at Oarai beach and the fish market instead - your choice on the day. Entry tickets for Ushiku Daibutsu and Hitachi Seaside Park are included. Lunch is optional - you can bring your own food or buy something at the fish market. Pickup and drop-off can be changed on request at no extra cost. Travelling with small children? Add their ages in the booking notes and we will bring child seats at no extra cost.
