The experience

Fukui has two great places for samurai history. Maruoka Castle is one of only 12 castle keeps in Japan that survive from the age of the samurai. Ichijodani was the capital of the Asakura clan for about 100 years until it was burned in 1573. This private 3-day trip from Tokyo visits both.
Maruoka Castle is small, old and full of character. Its stone roof tiles and steep wooden stairs are original. From the top floor you look across the Fukui plain.
At Ichijodani, the remains of a whole samurai town lie in a narrow valley. A street of houses has been rebuilt on the old foundations, with samurai homes and merchant shops. You also see the stone gardens of the Asakura family and the modern Ichijodani museum with finds from the site.
In Fukui city there is time for the stone walls of the old castle and the Yokokan garden of the Matsudaira lords.
Day 1 and day 3 are mostly travel days on the expressway.
Your driver-guide meets you in the lobby of your hotel in central Tokyo. The van has room for your luggage, and we stop at expressway rest areas for toilets, snacks and coffee. Times in the plan below are a guide and can shift a little with traffic.

DAY 1 Morning pickup in Tokyo and drive to Fukui (about 6 hours). Evening free in Fukui city.

DAY 3 Morning at the Yokokan garden in Fukui city, then drive back to your Tokyo hotel.
