The experience
A private journey, thoughtfully paced
Kochi is the home of katsuo tataki: bonito fish seared fast over a high straw fire, then sliced and eaten with salt or citrus sauce. On this tour you make it yourself. At a tataki class you hold the fish over the flames, slice it and eat it while it is still warm and smoky.
You also visit Hirome Market in central Kochi, a big indoor food hall with many small stalls and shared tables. It is the best place to try local food and meet Kochi people.
Kochi Castle is one of the few castles in Japan with its original keep and main buildings. You climb to the top for views over the city.
On another day you visit Ryugado Cave, a large limestone cave with stone shapes and an underground stream. You walk a lit path inside the cave.
Food note: the tataki class uses fish and is not halal-certified. We can serve your tataki with salt only. Dietary needs can be added in the booking form.
This is a private tour. Only your group. One van, 1 to 6 people, never shared. Your driver-guide speaks English, and also Hindi and Urdu.
If the tataki class is closed or cancelled on your date, you can take a full refund of your booking, guaranteed. If you prefer, we can instead take you to a local restaurant where you watch the chef grill tataki over straw and eat it fresh.
DAY 1 Pickup at your Tokyo hotel and drive west to Okayama (about 8 to 9 hours with breaks).
DAY 2 Drive over the mountains to Kochi. Afternoon at Kochi Castle and evening at Hirome Market.
DAY 3 Tataki class: grill bonito over straw and eat your lunch. Afternoon walk at Katsurahama beach.
DAY 4 Ryugado Cave in the morning, then drive to Okayama.
DAY 5 Drive back to your Tokyo hotel (about 8 to 9 hours with breaks).

The van has comfortable seats and we stop every 2 hours or so for rest areas, food and toilets.

Yes. It is a private tour in our own van, so your driver-guide can skip, extend or add stops where time allows.
Is the price per person?
No. The price is for your whole private group of up to 6 people, including the van, fuel, tolls, parking and your driver-guide.
What is the cancellation policy?
Cancel at least 24 hours before departure for an automatic full refund to the original payment method. Within 24 hours, contact us directly so we can help.
