The experience
A private journey, thoughtfully paced
Iwami Ginzan in Shimane was one of the largest silver mines in the world in the 1500s and 1600s. It is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, a green valley where the forest has grown back over the old mines.
On day 2 you walk or ride to the Ryugenji Mabu, a mine tunnel open to visitors, and see the marks of hand tools on the rock. Then you walk Omori, the old mine town, with wooden merchant houses and samurai homes.
On day 3 you visit Yunotsu, the old port where silver was shipped out, now a small hot spring town. Then you drive to Tsuwano, a quiet castle town known as the little Kyoto of San-in.
On day 4 you walk Tsuwano. Colorful koi swim in the stone canals along Tonomachi street. You climb to Taikodani Inari Shrine through a tunnel of about 1,000 red torii gates.
Your English-speaking driver-guide explains mining history and small-town life. This is a long drive, so the trip is spread over five days.
This is a private tour. Only your group. One van, one driver-guide, 1 to 6 guests, never shared with other travelers.
If the Ryugenji mine tunnel is closed on your date, you can take a full refund of your booking, guaranteed. If you prefer, we can instead visit the Iwami Ginzan World Heritage Center and the Omori town walk.
DAY 1 Pickup at your Tokyo hotel in the morning and drive west toward Shimane, overnight on the way (about 8 hours of driving).
DAY 2 Ryugenji Mabu mine tunnel and the Omori town walk at Iwami Ginzan.
DAY 3 Yunotsu hot spring port town, then the drive to Tsuwano.
DAY 4 Tsuwano canals, Tonomachi street and Taikodani Inari Shrine, then drive east, overnight on the way.
DAY 5 Continue the drive and arrive back at your Tokyo hotel in the evening.
