The experience
A private journey, thoughtfully paced
Go to Hokkaido the slow way, by sea, with your own van and guide on board. The car ferry from Oarai, near Tokyo, to Tomakomai takes about 18 hours. You sleep in a cabin berth and wake up on the open sea.
On Day 1 we leave Tokyo in the afternoon and drive to Oarai port, about 2 hours, and board the evening ferry.
On Day 2 we arrive in Tomakomai in the afternoon and drive south to Hakodate, about 3.5 hours. In the evening we ride the ropeway up Mt Hakodate. The night view of the city between two bays is one of the best known in Japan. The ropeway is included.
On Day 3 we start at the Hakodate Morning Market, with crab, squid and sea urchin. Breakfast is optional. Then Goryokaku, a star-shaped Western-style fort. You go up Goryokaku Tower to see the star shape from above. Ticket included. In the afternoon we walk the Motomachi slopes with old churches and the red brick warehouses by the bay.
On Day 4 we visit Onuma Quasi-National Park, with lakes, small islands and Mt Komagatake. We walk the island bridges. Then we drive to Tomakomai, about 2.5 hours, for the evening ferry.
On Day 5 we arrive in Oarai around midday and drive back to Tokyo.
This is a private tour. Only your group. One van, 1 to 6 people, never shared. Your driver-guide speaks English, and also Hindi and Urdu.
If the ferry or the Mt Hakodate ropeway is closed or cancelled on your date, you can receive a full refund for your booking, guaranteed. If you prefer, we can instead move the trip to the next ferry date, or see the night view by road from a lower viewpoint.

Yes. It is a private tour in our own van, so your driver-guide can skip, extend or add stops where time allows.
Is the price per person?
No. The price is for your whole private group of up to 6 people, including the van, fuel, tolls, parking and your driver-guide.
What is the cancellation policy?
Cancel at least 24 hours before departure for an automatic full refund to the original payment method. Within 24 hours, contact us directly so we can help.
