The experience
A private journey, thoughtfully paced
For more than 200 years, the Dutch were the only Europeans allowed to trade with Japan. This tour follows their story.
It starts in Hirado, a small island port in the north of Nagasaki. The Dutch East India Company opened its first trading post here in 1609. The stone warehouse of 1639 has been rebuilt as the Hirado Dutch Trading Post museum. You see maps, trade goods and the life of the traders.
In 1641 the Dutch were moved to Dejima, a small fan-shaped island in Nagasaki harbour. For two centuries this was Japan's main window to Europe. Today many Dejima buildings are rebuilt. You walk the kitchens, warehouses and the head of trade's house.
Then you visit Glover Garden on the hill, with western houses from the 1860s and wide views of Nagasaki harbour.
This tour is great for Dutch guests and for anyone who loves trade and world history.
This is a private tour. Only your group. One van, 1 to 6 people, never shared. Your driver-guide speaks English, and also Hindi and Urdu.
If the Hirado Dutch Trading Post is closed or cancelled on your date, you can take a full refund of your booking, guaranteed. If you prefer, we can instead visit Hirado Castle and the Matsura Historical Museum, which also tell the trade story.
