A quiet history trip to the Amakusa islands: the fishing village church of Sakitsu, Oe Church on the hill, and the story of Japan's Hidden Christians.
Road-day snapshot
This is your private tour, so the route is flexible: tell us if you want to skip a stop, stay longer somewhere or add a place nearby.
The experience
A private journey, thoughtfully paced
For more than 200 years, Christianity was banned in Japan. In the Amakusa islands of Kumamoto, many families kept their faith in secret. They prayed with objects that looked Buddhist or Shinto. Today they are known as the Hidden Christians.
The fishing village of Sakitsu is part of the UNESCO World Heritage site of Hidden Christian Sites in the Nagasaki Region. Its Gothic church stands among the fishing houses by the bay. Inside, the floor is tatami. You walk the narrow lanes, called toya, between the houses and the sea.
Oe Church stands white on a green hill. It was built by a French priest with help from local people. Nearby, the Amakusa Rosario Museum shows hidden prayer objects and the story of this faith.
The drive to Amakusa goes over a chain of bridges between the islands, with views of the sea.
The churches are places of worship. We visit quietly and with respect.
This is a private tour. Only your group. One van, 1 to 6 people, never shared. Your driver-guide speaks English, and also Hindi and Urdu.
If Sakitsu Church is closed or cancelled on your date, you can take a full refund of your booking, guaranteed. If you prefer, we can instead visit Oe Church and the Amakusa Christian Museum in more depth.
