The experience
A private journey, thoughtfully paced
Shodoshima is the second-largest island in the Seto Inland Sea. It has made soy sauce for about 400 years, and it was the first place in Japan to grow olives.
On day 2 you board the car ferry from Takamatsu with your van and cross the calm sea to Shodoshima, about one hour. On the island you visit the Marukin Soy Sauce Museum, an old brewery building where you see huge wooden barrels and the tools of soy making. Walk the Hishio no Sato area, where the smell of soy sauce fills the streets, and taste soy sauce ice cream.
In the afternoon you visit Olive Park, with olive groves, a white Greek-style windmill and sea views.
On day 3 you visit Angel Road, a sandbar that appears only at low tide and links small islands. Your guide plans the visit around the tide table for your date. Then you take the ferry back to Takamatsu.
Your English-speaking driver-guide explains island life. Soy sauce and olives are plant foods, but halal-certified food cannot be guaranteed.
This is a private tour. Only your group. One van, one driver-guide, 1 to 6 guests, never shared with other travelers.
If the ferry is cancelled on your date (for example in strong wind), you can take a full refund of your booking, guaranteed. If you prefer, we can instead visit Ritsurin Garden and a soy sauce maker on the Takamatsu side.
DAY 1 Pickup at your Tokyo hotel in the morning and drive to Takamatsu (about 9 hours with breaks). Free evening.
DAY 2 Car ferry to Shodoshima, Marukin Soy Sauce Museum, Hishio no Sato and Olive Park.
DAY 3 Angel Road at low tide, ferry back to Takamatsu, then drive to the Kobe area for the night.
DAY 4 Drive back to your Tokyo hotel (evening arrival).
