The experience

A private journey, thoughtfully paced

Kagawa is known as the udon prefecture of Japan. Sanuki udon is thick and chewy, and locals eat it for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

On day 2 you join a class at the Nakano Udon School in Kotohira. You mix the dough, knead it with your feet to music, roll it out and cut the noodles. Then you eat the udon you made.

After lunch you climb Konpira-san (Kotohiragu), a shrine for sailors and sea travel on Mount Zozu. 785 stone steps lead up to the main shrine, past shops, stone lanterns and gates. From the top you see the plain of Sanuki. Take it slow, there are many rest points. On the way down you see the outside of Kanamaru-za, the oldest surviving kabuki theater in Japan.

On day 3 you visit Ritsurin Garden in Takamatsu, a large strolling garden with ponds, bridges and pine trees shaped by hand over centuries. Stop for green tea at a tea house.

Udon dough is wheat, salt and water. The broth uses fish stock. Halal-certified food cannot be guaranteed.

This is a private tour. Only your group. One van, one driver-guide, 1 to 6 guests, never shared with other travelers.

If the udon class is closed on your date, you can take a full refund of your booking, guaranteed. If you prefer, we can instead visit a local udon shop to watch noodles made by hand and eat there.

DAY 1 Pickup at your Tokyo hotel in the morning and drive toward Shikoku, overnight on the way (about 8 hours of driving).

DAY 2 Udon class at Nakano Udon School, then the 785-step climb of Konpira-san.

DAY 3 Ritsurin Garden in Takamatsu, then drive to the Kobe area for the night.

DAY 4 Drive back to your Tokyo hotel (evening arrival).
