This is your private tour, so the route is flexible: tell us if you want to skip a stop, stay longer somewhere or add a place nearby.
The experience
A private journey, thoughtfully paced
The Naruto Strait between Awaji Island and Shikoku has some of the largest tidal whirlpools in the world. When the tide turns, the sea rushes through the narrow channel and spins into big swirls.
On day 2 you drive across Awaji Island to the Onaruto Bridge. You walk out on Uzu no Michi, a walkway inside the bridge 45 meters above the sea, and look down through glass floor panels at the whirlpools. Then you board a sightseeing boat that goes close to the swirls.
The best time is near spring tides, at the time of new moon and full moon. Your guide plans the boat around the tide table for your date.
On day 3 you visit Tokushima, the home of Awa indigo, the best-known natural indigo in Japan. At an indigo workshop you learn how the plant is fermented into dye, and dye your own handkerchief or scarf with deep blue patterns.
Your English-speaking driver-guide drives the van and explains tides, bridges and indigo craft.
This is a private tour. Only your group. One van, one driver-guide, 1 to 6 guests, never shared with other travelers.
If the whirlpool boat is cancelled on your date (for example in rough sea), you can take a full refund of your booking, guaranteed. If you prefer, we can instead spend more time on the Uzu no Michi walkway above the whirlpools.
DAY 1 Pickup at your Tokyo hotel in the morning and drive to Kobe area (about 7 hours with breaks). Free evening.
DAY 2 Across Awaji Island to Naruto. Uzu no Michi walkway and the whirlpool boat at the best tide time.
DAY 3 Awa indigo dyeing workshop in Tokushima.
DAY 4 Morning departure and the drive back to your Tokyo hotel (evening arrival).
Choose with confidence
Is this the right journey for your group?
Excellent fit if
- Uzu no Michi glass-floor walkway above the Naruto whirlpools
- Sightseeing boat close to the swirling tidal currents
- Dye your own cloth with natural Awa indigo
- Drive across Awaji Island and the Akashi Kaikyo Bridge
- Boat time planned around the tide table for your date
Said plainly
Whirlpool size depends on the tide. Spring tides around new and full moon are best. Indigo dye can stain. Wear dark clothes. Dietary needs can be added in the booking form. If the whirlpool boat is closed or cancelled on your date, you can take a full refund of your booking, guaranteed. If you prefer, we can instead spend more time on the Uzu no Michi walkway above the whirlpools.
