The experience
A private journey, thoughtfully paced
Mount Yoshino in Nara has been Japan's most famous cherry blossom place for more than 1,000 years. About 30,000 trees grow on the slopes in groups named the Lower, Middle, Upper and Inner Thousand Trees. They bloom from the bottom up, so the season moves slowly up the mountain.
On day 2 you walk the main street of Yoshinoyama with your guide. You visit Kinpusenji, the head temple of Shugendo, a mountain faith that mixes Buddhism and old nature worship. Its Zao-do hall is one of the largest wooden buildings in Japan. Then you walk to viewpoints over the slopes of trees.
Yoshino is also known for kuzu, a starch from the kudzu root. You stop at a kuzu sweets shop to taste kuzu mochi or kuzu noodles.
In November the slopes turn red and gold with autumn leaves, and the mountain is much quieter.
Your English-speaking driver-guide explains Shugendo, the long history of the mountain and the best viewpoints.
This is a private tour. Only your group. One van, one driver-guide, 1 to 6 guests, never shared with other travelers.
If Kinpusenji is closed on your date, you can take a full refund of your booking, guaranteed. If you prefer, we can instead visit another temple on Mount Yoshino.
DAY 1 Pickup at your Tokyo hotel in the morning and drive to the Yoshino area (about 7 hours with breaks). Free evening.
DAY 2 Yoshinoyama walk, Kinpusenji Zao-do hall, viewpoints over the cherry slopes and a kuzu sweets stop.
DAY 3 Morning walk in the Upper Thousand Trees area, then the drive back to your Tokyo hotel (evening arrival).
Choose with confidence
Is this the right journey for your group?
Excellent fit if
- About 30,000 cherry trees on the slopes of Mount Yoshino
- Kinpusenji Zao-do, one of Japan's largest wooden halls
- Learn about Shugendo, the old mountain faith of Yoshino
- Kuzu mochi or kuzu noodles at a local sweets shop
- Red and gold autumn leaves in November
Said plainly
Cherry blossom timing changes every year. Early to mid April is usual, but full bloom is never guaranteed. In blossom season, roads on the mountain are limited and there are many visitors. Expect walking on slopes. Dietary needs can be added in the booking form. If Kinpusenji is closed or cancelled on your date, you can take a full refund of your booking, guaranteed. If you prefer, we can instead visit another temple on Mount Yoshino.
