The experience
A private journey, thoughtfully paced
The Kishigawa Line is a small local railway in Wakayama. It became famous when a cat named Tama was made stationmaster at Kishi Station. Today the line runs fun themed trains, and Kishi Station has a station building shaped like a cat's face.
On day 2 you ride the Kishigawa Line from Wakayama Station to Kishi Station through farms and small towns. The present cat stationmaster, Nitama, may be seen on duty days. This is a train ride, not an animal show, and guests do not touch or feed the cat.
In the afternoon you drive to Arida, the top mikan orange area in Japan. Stone-walled terraces of orange trees cover the hills. From November to January you pick and eat sweet mikan right from the tree.
Before you leave, you try Wakayama ramen, a rich pork and soy sauce noodle soup. Pork-free options can be found but halal food cannot be guaranteed.
Your English-speaking driver-guide drives the van, meets you at the last station and explains local life along the way.
This is a private tour. Only your group. One van, one driver-guide, 1 to 6 guests, never shared with other travelers.
If the Kishigawa Line or the orchard picking is cancelled on your date, you can take a full refund of your booking, guaranteed. If you prefer, we can instead visit another local railway or a fruit farm shop of the same kind.
DAY 1 Pickup at your Tokyo hotel in the morning and drive to Wakayama (about 8 hours with breaks). Free evening.
DAY 2 Kishigawa Line ride to Kishi Station, then mikan picking in Arida and a Wakayama ramen dinner.
DAY 3 Morning departure and the drive back to your Tokyo hotel (evening arrival).
