The experience
A private journey, thoughtfully paced
In winter, the small Tsugaru Railway in Aomori runs old carriages heated by pot-bellied coal stoves. Passengers warm their hands, and staff grill dried squid on the stove top. Outside the windows, the rice fields of the Tsugaru plain lie under deep snow. This 3-day trip joins that train ride with the home town of the writer Dazai Osamu.
On day 1 your driver-guide picks you up at your hotel in central Tokyo and drives north on the Tohoku Expressway, with rest stops. You reach the Tsugaru area in the evening.
Day 2 starts in Goshogawara at the Tachineputa Museum. Inside stand giant festival floats over 20 metres tall, used in the summer Tachineputa festival. Then you board the stove train for your ride across the snowy plain. Your driver-guide drives ahead and meets you at Kanagi Station. In Kanagi you visit Shayokan, the large Western-Japanese house where Dazai Osamu was born. Today it is a memorial hall about his life and books, such as No Longer Human. Next you listen to a live Tsugaru shamisen performance. This fast, strong style of shamisen music was born in this area. In the evening you return to your hotel.
On day 3 you drive back south to your Tokyo hotel.
This is a private tour. Only your group. One van, 1 to 6 guests, never shared with strangers. Your driver-guide speaks English, and also Hindi and Urdu. The stove train runs only in winter, from December to March. If the stove train is cancelled on your date, you can take a full refund of your booking, guaranteed. If you prefer, we can instead ride the regular Tsugaru Railway train on the same line.
