The experience
A private journey, thoughtfully paced
Tamba-Tachikui in Hyogo is one of the Six Ancient Kilns of Japan. Potters have worked here for more than 800 years, and many family kilns still line the small valley roads.
On day 2 you join a hands-on pottery workshop with a local kiln. You shape your own cup or bowl with clay from the area. The finished piece is fired later and can be shipped to you (shipping is extra). Then you walk the village and see old climbing kilns built up the hillside.
In the afternoon you visit Sasayama, a castle town with samurai houses, merchant streets and the large stone walls of Sasayama Castle.
The area is famous for Tamba kuromame, large black soybeans. In autumn (October to December) you can taste the young beans and black-bean sweets at a farm lunch. Tamba black beans are a plant food, and simple vegetarian options are easy here.
Your English-speaking driver-guide drives the van and helps you talk with the potters.
This is a private tour. Only your group. One van, one driver-guide, 1 to 6 guests, never shared with other travelers.
If the pottery workshop is closed on your date, you can take a full refund of your booking, guaranteed. If you prefer, we can instead join a workshop at another Tachikui kiln.
DAY 1 Pickup at your Tokyo hotel in the morning and drive to Tamba-Sasayama (about 7 hours with breaks). Free evening.
DAY 2 Pottery workshop in Tachikui and a walk past old climbing kilns, black-bean farm lunch, Sasayama castle town.
DAY 3 Morning free in Sasayama, then the drive back to your Tokyo hotel (evening arrival).
