The experience
A private journey, thoughtfully paced
Shirakami-Sanchi is a huge, quiet forest of Japanese beech on the border of Aomori and Akita. In 1993 it became one of Japan's first natural World Heritage sites. Very few roads enter the core area, so the forest feels old and wild. On this 3-day trip you walk its edges with a local nature guide and see the famous Aoike pond.
Day 1 is a long drive north from your hotel in central Tokyo. Your driver-guide takes the Tohoku Expressway with rest stops, and you reach the Japan Sea side of Aomori in the evening.
On day 2 you start at a Shirakami-Sanchi visitor center to learn how the beech forest works and why it matters. Then your local nature guide leads you on a forest walk toward Anmon Falls, a set of waterfalls in a green gorge. The guide shows you plants, old trees and signs of the animals that live here. Wild animals such as serows and many birds may be seen, but never promised. In the afternoon you visit the Juniko Lakes, a group of small lakes in the beech woods. The best known is Aoike, a pond with water so blue it looks painted. A short, easy path leads around it. You end the day on the Fukaura coast, watching the sun go down over the Sea of Japan when the sky is clear.
On day 3 you drive back south to your Tokyo hotel, with rest stops along the way.
This is a private tour. Only your group. One van, 1 to 6 guests, never shared with strangers. Your driver-guide speaks English, and also Hindi and Urdu. This tour runs from May to November. Fresh green leaves fill May and June, and autumn colours are best in October. If the forest trails are closed on your date, you can take a full refund of your booking, guaranteed. If you prefer, we can instead walk a different open beech forest path with your nature guide.

No. The price is for your whole private group of up to 6 people, including the van, fuel, tolls, parking and your driver-guide.
What is the cancellation policy?
Cancel at least 24 hours before departure for an automatic full refund to the original payment method. Within 24 hours, contact us directly so we can help.
