The experience
A private journey, thoughtfully paced
Miwa, in Sakurai city, Nara, is one of the oldest places in Japan. Omiwa Shrine has no main hall. Instead, people pray to Mount Miwa itself, which is thought to be the home of the god. The god is also linked to sake making, and brewers all over Japan hang a ball of cedar leaves, a sugidama, from Omiwa Shrine.
Miwa is also known as the birthplace of somen, very thin wheat noodles. On day 2 you join a somen experience and try stretching the noodles by hand, then eat cold somen for lunch.
After lunch you visit a sake brewery in the Miwa area to see how sake is made and taste local sake. Non-drinkers and the driver can taste non-alcoholic drinks instead.
On day 3 you visit Hasedera, a mountain temple with a long covered stairway and a tall wooden Kannon statue.
Your English-speaking driver-guide explains the shrine, old food traditions and how to enjoy sake. This product includes alcohol and is not halal.
This is a private tour. Only your group. One van, one driver-guide, 1 to 6 guests, never shared with other travelers.
If the somen experience or the brewery is closed on your date, you can take a full refund of your booking, guaranteed. If you prefer, we can instead visit another somen maker or sake brewery in the area.
DAY 1 Pickup at your Tokyo hotel in the morning and drive to Nara (about 7 hours with breaks). Free evening.
DAY 2 Omiwa Shrine, somen stretching experience and somen lunch, then a Miwa sake brewery visit and tasting.
DAY 3 Hasedera in the morning, then the drive back to your Tokyo hotel (evening arrival).
