The experience
A private journey, thoughtfully paced
Kyoto has made silk for kimono for over 1,000 years. This trip skips the busy temple route and puts a tool in your hand, with three workshops led by local artisans.
On Day 1 we drive from Tokyo to Kyoto, about 6 hours. You stay in Kyoto.
On Day 2 we go to the Nishijin area, the old weaving district. At the Nishijin Textile Center you see a kimono show and weavers at work, then weave a small piece on a hand loom. Your weaving class is included. In the afternoon you join a Kyo-yuzen dyeing workshop. Yuzen is the hand-painted dyeing style used on fine kimono. You colour your own handkerchief or small cloth with stencils and brushes and take it home the same day. Included.
On Day 3 we visit a Kiyomizu-yaki pottery studio in the Gojozaka area, below Kiyomizu-dera. You shape or paint your own cup with a potter. The class is included. Then we drive back to Tokyo, about 6 hours.
Weaving and dyeing pieces go home with you. Pottery is fired after the tour and takes several weeks.
This is a private tour. Only your group. One van, 1 to 6 people, never shared. Your driver-guide speaks English, and also Hindi and Urdu.
If a workshop is closed or cancelled on your date, you can take a full refund of your booking, guaranteed. If you prefer, we can instead join another Kyoto craft workshop of the same kind, such as a different yuzen or pottery studio.
