The experience
A private journey, thoughtfully paced
The Kurobe Gorge in Toyama is one of the deepest gorges in Japan. A small trolley train, first built for dam construction, runs from Unazuki Onsen into the gorge, over red bridges and through tunnels. This private 3-day trip from Tokyo runs from April to November, when the line is open.
You ride in open-air cars with the wind and the sound of the river around you. The water below is a bright emerald green, and the cliffs rise steeply on both sides. In autumn the gorge turns red and gold.
Since the 2024 Noto earthquake, the upper part of the line has had limited service. We ride the section that is open on your date. Your train ticket is included.
Unazuki Onsen is a hot spring town at the start of the line. There is time to walk to the Yamabiko footbridge and see the red Shin-Yamabiko bridge, and to enjoy the foot bath at the station.
Day 1 and day 3 include the long drive between Tokyo and Toyama, with rest stops.
Your driver-guide meets you in the lobby of your hotel in central Tokyo. The van has room for your luggage, and we stop at expressway rest areas for toilets, snacks and coffee. Times in the plan below are a guide and can shift a little with traffic.
This is a private tour. Only your group. Your driver-guide speaks English, and also Hindi and Urdu.

DAY 1 Morning pickup in Tokyo and drive to Unazuki Onsen (about 5 hours 30 minutes). Afternoon walk to the bridges and the foot bath. Evening free in Unazuki.
DAY 2 Round trip on the Kurobe Gorge Railway trolley train on the section open on your date, with a walk at the stop.
DAY 3 Morning drive back to your Tokyo hotel, with rest stops on the way.

The trolley train runs about April to November. Since the 2024 earthquake, service on the upper part of the line has been limited. We ride the open section The open cars can be cold. Yes. It is a private tour in our own van, so your driver-guide can skip, extend or add stops where time allows.
Is the price per person?
No. The price is for your whole private group of up to 6 people, including the van, fuel, tolls, parking and your driver-guide.
What is the cancellation policy?
Cancel at least 24 hours before departure for an automatic full refund to the original payment method. Within 24 hours, contact us directly so we can help.
