The experience
A private journey, thoughtfully paced
Kosaka in Akita was once one of Japan's richest mining towns. The mine company built a fine office and a theatre for its workers, and both still stand. Nearby Odate is the home of magewappa, light boxes of bent cedar. This private 3-day trip from Tokyo explores both towns.
Korakukan is a wooden kabuki theatre from 1910, one of the oldest still in use in Japan. On a guided visit you see the seats on tatami, the walkway through the audience and the space below the stage, where people turned the revolving stage by hand.
The Kosaka Mine Office from 1905 is a large Western-style wooden building. Its museum shows the history of the mine and the town.
In Odate, makers bend thin strips of Akita cedar into boxes for lunch and rice. At a magewappa workshop you see the work and make a small item yourself.
For lunch in Odate we stop at a restaurant for kiritanpo hot pot, a local dish of grilled rice sticks in chicken broth. Akita is far, so day 1 and day 3 are long travel days.
Your driver-guide meets you in the lobby of your hotel in central Tokyo. The van has room for your luggage, and we stop at expressway rest areas for toilets, snacks and coffee. Times in the plan below are a guide and can shift a little with traffic.
This is a private tour. Only your group. Your driver-guide speaks English, and also Hindi and Urdu.
If a core site is closed on your date, you can take a full refund of your booking, guaranteed.
