The experience
A private journey, thoughtfully paced
Ama are women free-divers who gather shellfish and seaweed from the sea with one breath. Their work in Ise-Shima goes back thousands of years. This tour joins ama culture with Ise Jingu, Japan's most sacred shrine.
On Day 1 we drive from Tokyo to Ise, about 6 hours. In the late afternoon we stop at Meoto Iwa in Futami, two sea rocks tied with a thick rope. You stay in Ise or Toba.
On Day 2 we visit Ise Jingu. We start at the Outer Shrine, Geku, then the Inner Shrine, Naiku, across the Uji Bridge and through the tall cedar forest. Entry is free. After that you walk Okage Yokocho, an old-style street of shops and food. Then we go to an ama hut on the coast near Toba. Ama divers grill fresh seafood over charcoal in front of you and share stories of their life. Lunch is included.
On Day 3 we visit Mikimoto Pearl Island in Toba, where Kokichi Mikimoto made the world's first cultured pearl. You see the pearl museum and an ama diving demo in the sea. Entry included. Then we drive back to Tokyo.
Halal: the ama hut serves seafood grilled over charcoal. It is not halal certified, but it is seafood only. Dietary needs can be added in the booking form.
This is a private tour. Only your group. One van, 1 to 6 people, never shared. Your driver-guide speaks English, and also Hindi and Urdu.
If the ama hut or the ama diving demo is closed or cancelled on your date, you can take a full refund of your booking, guaranteed. If you prefer, we can instead have a seafood lunch at a coastal restaurant and visit the Toba Sea-Folk Museum about ama life.

Yes. It is a private tour in our own van, so your driver-guide can skip, extend or add stops where time allows.
Is the price per person?
No. The price is for your whole private group of up to 6 people, including the van, fuel, tolls, parking and your driver-guide.
What is the cancellation policy?
Cancel at least 24 hours before departure for an automatic full refund to the original payment method. Within 24 hours, contact us directly so we can help.
