The experience
A private journey, thoughtfully paced
Asuka, in the south of Nara, was the center of Japan in the 6th and 7th centuries. Today it is a quiet farming village with rice fields, but strange stone works and old tombs are hidden everywhere.
On day 2 you ride electric-assist bikes through the village with your guide. The e-bike makes the small hills easy. You visit Ishibutai Kofun, a huge tomb made of giant stones, some heavier than 70 tons. You stop at Kameishi, the turtle stone, a large carved rock in the fields. Then you visit Asukadera, said to be Japan's oldest Buddhist temple, with the Asuka Great Buddha, one of the oldest Buddha statues in Japan.
On day 3 you drive to Hasedera in Sakurai, a mountain temple with a long covered stairway of 399 steps and a tall wooden statue of Kannon. In spring and autumn the gardens are full of flowers.
Your English-speaking driver-guide explains the stories of the first emperors and the mystery stones, and the van stays close by on the ride.
This is a private tour. Only your group. One van, one driver-guide, 1 to 6 guests, never shared with other travelers.
If heavy rain stops the e-bike ride on your date, you can take a full refund of your booking, guaranteed. If you prefer, we can instead visit the same Asuka sites by van with short walks.
DAY 1 Pickup at your Tokyo hotel in the morning and drive to Nara (about 7 hours with breaks). Free evening.
DAY 2 Asuka by e-bike: Ishibutai Kofun, Kameishi, Asukadera and the Asuka Great Buddha.
DAY 3 Hasedera in Sakurai in the morning, then the drive back to your Tokyo hotel (evening arrival).
