The experience
A private journey, thoughtfully paced
Inaniwa udon is one of Japan's three great udon noodles. It is thin, smooth and silky, and it has been made by hand in the small village of Inaniwa in Akita for more than 300 years. Nearby Yuzawa is a snowy town with clean water and a long history of sake brewing. This 3-day trip takes you to both.
On day 1 your driver-guide picks you up at your hotel in central Tokyo and drives north on the Tohoku Expressway, with rest stops. You reach Yuzawa in the evening.
On day 2 you go to Inaniwa and visit an udon maker. You watch the dough being kneaded, twisted and stretched by hand into long, thin noodles, then hung to dry. Then you sit down to an Inaniwa udon lunch, served cold with dipping sauce or hot in soup. In the afternoon you walk through Yuzawa's brewery area and visit a sake brewery. You learn how rice, water and the cold winter make good sake, and join a tasting. A non-alcoholic tasting of local drinks is offered for drivers and non-drinkers. You end the day with a bath at a local hot spring.
On day 3 you drive back south to your Tokyo hotel, arriving in the evening.
This is a private tour. Only your group. One van, 1 to 6 guests, never shared with strangers. Your driver-guide speaks English, and also Hindi and Urdu. If the udon maker's workshop is closed on your date, you can take a full refund of your booking, guaranteed. If you prefer, we can instead visit a different Inaniwa udon maker to see the hand-stretching.
