The experience
A private journey, thoughtfully paced
Yonezawa in Yamagata was the castle town of the Uesugi family, one of the famous samurai clans of Japan. It is also the home of Yonezawa beef, one of the top wagyu brands in the country. This 2-day trip joins samurai history with a fine beef lunch at the source.
On day 1 your driver-guide picks you up at your hotel in central Tokyo and drives north, with rest stops. In the afternoon you reach Yonezawa and walk into Matsugasaki Park, the site of the old Yonezawa Castle. Inside the moat stands Uesugi Shrine, which honours the warlord Uesugi Kenshin. Next you visit the Uesugi Museum to see armour, folding screens and other treasures of the clan, and learn about the clan's wise leader Uesugi Yozan. You stay in Yonezawa that night.
On day 2 you learn about Yonezawa's silk weaving, which grew under the Uesugi lords, and see local textiles. Then you sit down to a Yonezawa beef lunch. Your driver-guide explains how the beef is raised. After lunch you drive back to your Tokyo hotel, arriving in the evening.
In winter, the Uesugi Snow Lantern Festival lights up the shrine area in February with hundreds of snow lanterns.
Yonezawa beef is not halal. Guests who do not eat beef can choose a non-beef lunch in the booking form.
This is a private tour. Only your group. One van, 1 to 6 guests, never shared with strangers. Your driver-guide speaks English, and also Hindi and Urdu. If the Uesugi Museum is closed on your date, you can take a full refund of your booking, guaranteed. If you prefer, we can instead visit the Uesugi family graves and other clan sites in Yonezawa.
