The experience
A private journey, thoughtfully paced
Mt Ontake in Nagano has been a sacred mountain for centuries. Pilgrims of the Ontake-ko faith dressed in white and climbed it to pray. Along the old trails they left thousands of stone monuments called reijinhi, carved with the names of their teachers. Many still stand in the forest today.
With your guide you walk a section of the Ontake Kodo trail from Otaki Village. You pass stone monuments, small shrines and the Kiyotaki and Shintaki waterfalls, where pilgrims still stand under the falling water. The walk is about 1 to 3 hours at an easy pace.
Then we ride the Ontake Ropeway up to about 2,150 m for wide views of the mountain and the Central Alps. Your ropeway ticket is included. The summit area is not part of this tour. Mt Ontake erupted in 2014, and we visit the mountain with care and respect.
On Day 2 we drive across the Kaida Kogen highland, an open plateau with views of Ontake, and visit Kiso-Fukushima, an old post town on the Nakasendo road. You book your own hotel in Kiso-Fukushima.
This is a private tour. Only your group. One family or group of 1 to 6 people per van, never shared with strangers. Your driver-guide speaks English, and also Hindi and Urdu.
If the Ontake Ropeway is closed or cancelled on your date, you can take a full refund of your booking, guaranteed. If you prefer, we can instead walk more of the Ontake Kodo trail and visit the Kiso-Fukushima old town and its checkpoint museum.
DAY 1 Hotel pickup in Tokyo and drive to the Kiso Valley (about 4 hours). Afternoon: Ontake Kodo trail walk past stone monuments and waterfalls.
DAY 2 Ontake Ropeway, the Kaida Kogen highland, Kiso-Fukushima town, and the drive back to your Tokyo hotel.
