The experience
A private journey, thoughtfully paced
Ishinomaki is a fishing city on the coast of Miyagi. In March 2011 the tsunami hit it very hard. Today the city remembers the people it lost, and it also keeps a bright, creative spirit, shown in its large manga museum. This 2-day trip shows both sides with care: places of memory and places of recovery.
On day 1 your driver-guide picks you up at your hotel in central Tokyo and drives north on the Tohoku Expressway, with rest stops. In the afternoon you visit the Ishinomori Manga Museum, called Mangattan. Its rounded white building looks like a spaceship by the river. Inside you learn about Ishinomori Shotaro, creator of Cyborg 009 and Kamen Rider. Statues of his characters stand along the streets of the city centre. You spend the night in Ishinomaki.
On day 2 you visit Kadonowaki, an area by the sea. At the memorial park, you see the ruins of Kadonowaki Elementary School, kept as a memorial, and learn how the tsunami came. Then you drive inland along the Kitakami River to the ruins of Okawa Elementary School. Many children and teachers lost their lives here. It is a quiet place of prayer, and your guide shares its story calmly. Before driving home you stop at an Ishinomaki seafood market for a fresh lunch. You are back at your Tokyo hotel in the evening.
This is a private tour. Only your group. One van, 1 to 6 guests, never shared with strangers. Your driver-guide speaks English, and also Hindi and Urdu. If the manga museum is closed on your date, you can take a full refund of your booking, guaranteed. If you prefer, we can instead walk the city's manga character statue road.

What is the cancellation policy?
Cancel at least 24 hours before departure for an automatic full refund to the original payment method. Within 24 hours, contact us directly so we can help.
