The experience
A private journey, thoughtfully paced
Mizuhiki are thin paper cords tied into knots and shapes to decorate gifts in Japan. You see them on wedding envelopes and New Year gifts. Iida, in the south of Nagano, makes most of the mizuhiki in Japan, and many local workshops still make them by hand.
On Day 1 we pick you up at your hotel in central Tokyo and drive west, about 4 hours, down the Ina Valley between the Central and Southern Alps. In the afternoon we join a mizuhiki workshop in Iida. A local maker teaches you the basic knots, and you make your own keepsake, like a small decoration or an accessory, to take home. The workshop fee is included. Then we take a walk on the apple tree avenue in the center of Iida. You stay overnight in Iida.
On Day 2 we drive south to Tenryu Gorge. Here the Tenryu River runs between steep rock walls. A walking path of about 1 hour follows the gorge and crosses a high suspension bridge with views down to the river. Your guide walks with you.
After lunch we drive back north through the Ina Valley and to Tokyo, arriving at your hotel in the evening.
This is a private tour. Only your group. One group per van, for 1 to 6 people.
If the workshop is cancelled on your date, you can take a full refund of your booking, guaranteed.
