The experience
A private journey, thoughtfully paced
Happo Pond, or Happo-ike, lies at about 2,060 m on the ridge above Hakuba. On a calm day the peaks of the Hakuba range reflect in its still water. It is one of the most loved short hikes in the Northern Alps, and lifts take you most of the way up.
On Day 1 we pick you up at your hotel in central Tokyo and drive to Hakuba, about 4 hours. In the afternoon we visit the Hakuba Ski Jump Stadium from the 1998 Winter Olympics and walk around Hakuba village. You stay overnight in Hakuba.
On Day 2 we start early, when the weather is often clearest. You ride the Adam Gondola and two chair lifts up to Happo-one at about 1,830 m. Gondola and lift tickets are included. From the top lift, a stone path climbs along the ridge to Happo Pond. It takes about 1.5 hours up and 1 hour down at a slow pace. Your guide walks with you. Alpine flowers grow beside the path in summer, and wild birds such as the rock ptarmigan may be seen.
After the hike we ride the lifts down and have lunch in Hakuba. Then we drive back to Tokyo, arriving at your hotel in the evening.

DAY 1 Tokyo pickup, drive to Hakuba, Olympic ski jump stadium, Hakuba village, overnight.

This tour runs from June to October. Snow can remain on the path until early July. If the Happo-one gondola is closed or cancelled on your date, you can take a full refund of your booking, guaranteed. If you prefer, we can instead take you up another Hakuba mountain by gondola for an easier alpine walk. The trail is rocky and steep in parts. You need walking shoes, rain gear and a warm layer. It is about 3 hours of walking. Mountain weather changes fast. Your guide may turn back early for safety. If your guide turns back early and Happo Pond is not reached, you can take a full refund of your booking, guaranteed.
