The experience
A private journey, thoughtfully paced
Akiyamago is a group of small hamlets along the Nakatsu River, on the border of Nagano and Niigata. It is one of the most remote places in central Japan, and in the past it was cut off by snow for months. Local legend says some of the first settlers were Heike warriors who hid here after losing a great war in the 12th century.
On Day 1 we pick you up at your hotel in central Tokyo and drive north, about 4 hours, through Niigata and into the valley. In the afternoon we walk around the hamlets with your guide. You see old farm houses, rice fields and the deep Nakatsu River gorge. A small local museum shows the tools and clothes people used to survive the long winters. Entry is included. In the evening you have a soak in one of the valley's hot springs. The bath fee is included. You stay overnight in the Akiyamago or Tsunan area.
On Day 2 we explore more of the valley in the morning. We stop at viewpoints over the gorge and walk a short forest path. On the way out we drive through the hill country of Tsunan, with its terraced fields and ponds.
We drive back to Tokyo after lunch and reach your hotel in the evening.

Some roads into the valley close in winter If the road into Akiyamago is closed or cancelled on your date, you can take a full refund of your booking, guaranteed. If you prefer, we can instead spend the two days in the Tsunan hill country and the Kiyotsu Gorge area of Niigata The road into the valley is narrow and winding. Shops are very few. Cancel at least 24 hours before departure for an automatic full refund to the original payment method. Within 24 hours, contact us directly so we can help.
