The experience
A private journey, thoughtfully paced
Kumamoto Castle is one of the great castles of Japan. Strong earthquakes in 2016 damaged its stone walls and keep. The main keep has since been rebuilt and opened again, and you can see the long repair work on the walls as you walk.
From the keep you look over the city. Inside are displays on the castle's history and the repair.
You also visit Hosokawa Gyobu-tei, a large samurai residence of the Hosokawa family, the lords of Kumamoto. You walk through tatami rooms and its garden.
Suizenji Jojuen is a garden made by the Hosokawa lords. Its small hill is shaped like Mount Fuji, and a clear spring pond runs around it.
At lunch you eat Kumamoto ramen, a pork bone soup with fried garlic oil. This ramen uses pork. We can suggest a non-pork lunch instead. Dietary needs can be added in the booking form.
This is a private tour. Only your group. One van, 1 to 6 people, never shared. Your driver-guide speaks English, and also Hindi and Urdu.
If Kumamoto Castle is closed or cancelled on your date, you can take a full refund of your booking, guaranteed. If you prefer, we can instead visit the Hosokawa Gyobu-tei samurai residence and the Kumamoto Castle museum Wakuwakuza.

If you prefer, we can instead visit the Hosokawa Gyobu-tei samurai residence and the Kumamoto Castle museum Wakuwakuza. This tour has long driving days.
