The experience
A private journey, thoughtfully paced
Takachiho in the mountains of Miyazaki is the land of Japan's oldest myths. Here the sun goddess Amaterasu is said to have hidden in a cave, and the gods danced to bring her out.
In Takachiho Gorge you row a small boat on the green river between high basalt cliffs. You pass right under Manai Falls as it drops into the gorge.
You visit Amano Iwato Shrine, linked to the cave of the myth, and walk to Amano Yasukawara, a river cave where many small stone piles are left by visitors.
In the evening you watch Yokagura at Takachiho Shrine. Local performers dance the story of the gods in masks, for about one hour.
Then you cross into Kumamoto to Kurokawa Onsen, a small hot spring village in a valley with wooden inns and many outdoor baths. With a tegata wooden pass you can try outdoor baths at different inns.
This is a private tour. Only your group. One van, 1 to 6 people, never shared. Your driver-guide speaks English, and also Hindi and Urdu.
If the Takachiho Gorge rowboats is closed or cancelled on your date, you can take a full refund of your booking, guaranteed. If you prefer, we can instead walk the gorge path above the river to see Manai Falls from the viewpoints.
