The experience
A private journey, thoughtfully paced
Kochi Prefecture has two long arms of land that reach into the Pacific Ocean. This tour visits both.
Cape Muroto is a UNESCO Global Geopark. Here you see rocks that came up from the sea floor, bent stone layers and strong waves. At the tip is Mikurodo, a small cave where the young monk Kukai is said to have meditated. Looking out from the cave, he only saw sky and sea. Kukai later took the name Kukai, which means sky and sea.
Cape Ashizuri is at the far southwest of Shikoku. Tall white cliffs drop into a deep blue sea. You walk the path under the camellia trees to the lighthouse viewpoint. Near the cape is Kongofukuji, Temple 38 of the Shikoku pilgrimage, with a pond garden and many stone statues.
These two capes are far from big cities, so the drives are long and the places are quiet. It is a trip for people who love coasts, geology and calm temples.
This is a private tour. Only your group. One van, 1 to 6 people, never shared. Your driver-guide speaks English, and also Hindi and Urdu.
If Mikurodo Cave is closed or cancelled on your date, you can take a full refund of your booking, guaranteed. If you prefer, we can instead walk the Muroto Geopark coast trail and visit Hotsumisaki-ji temple on the cape.
DAY 1 Pickup at your Tokyo hotel and drive west to Tokushima (about 9 to 10 hours with breaks).
DAY 2 Coast road south to Cape Muroto: Mikurodo cave and the Geopark coast. Drive on to Kochi city.
DAY 3 Drive west to Cape Ashizuri: cliff path, lighthouse viewpoint and Kongofukuji temple.
DAY 4 Drive from Ashizuri back across Shikoku to Okayama.
DAY 5 Drive back to your Tokyo hotel (about 8 to 9 hours with breaks).
Choose with confidence
Is this the right journey for your group?
Excellent fit if
- Stand in Mikurodo, the sea cave linked to the monk Kukai
- See uplifted sea-floor rocks in Muroto Geopark
- Walk the cliff path to the Cape Ashizuri lighthouse
- Visit Kongofukuji, Temple 38 of the Shikoku route
- Drive long, empty coast roads on the Pacific
Said plainly
Mikurodo cave can close after heavy rain or rock falls. If Mikurodo Cave is closed or cancelled on your date, you can take a full refund of your booking, guaranteed. If you prefer, we can instead walk the Muroto Geopark coast trail and visit Hotsumisaki-ji temple on the cape. This tour has long driving days. The van has comfortable seats and we stop every 2 hours or so for rest areas, food and toilets. This is our longest-driving route.
