From Tokyo: 5-Day Sakurajima Volcano Customizable Tour
Take the ferry to the smoking Sakurajima volcano, walk the Shimadzu garden of Sengan-en, and cut your own Satsuma kiriko glass in Kagoshima.
Road-day snapshot
This is your private tour, so the route is flexible: tell us if you want to skip a stop, stay longer somewhere or add a place nearby.
The experience
A private journey, thoughtfully paced
Kagoshima is a city that lives next to a volcano. Across the bay, Sakurajima often sends up smoke and ash.
You cross the bay on the Sakurajima ferry, a short ride of about 15 minutes. On the island we drive to viewpoints such as Yunohira, close to the mountain. You see old lava fields and a shrine gate half buried by the 1914 eruption.
Back in the city you visit Sengan-en, the garden of the Shimadzu lords. It uses Sakurajima as a view across the water. You walk the garden and the old house.
Next to the garden is the home of Satsuma kiriko, a cut glass with deep color and soft gradation. In a kiriko cutting experience at Sengan-en, you cut a pattern into your own glass with a turning wheel. You take it home.
The tour also includes a drive along Kinko Bay and a view from Shiroyama hill.
This is a private tour. Only your group. One van, 1 to 6 people, never shared. Your driver-guide speaks English, and also Hindi and Urdu.
If the Sakurajima ferry or the volcano roads is closed or cancelled on your date, you can take a full refund of your booking, guaranteed. If you prefer, we can instead see Sakurajima from Shiroyama viewpoint in Kagoshima city and add a longer visit to Sengan-en.
DAY 1 Pickup at your Tokyo hotel and drive west to Okayama (about 8 to 9 hours with breaks).
DAY 2 Long drive to Kagoshima (about 9 hours with breaks). Evening view from Shiroyama hill.
DAY 3 Sakurajima ferry, Yunohira viewpoint, lava fields and the buried shrine gate.
DAY 4 Sengan-en garden and the Satsuma kiriko cutting experience, then drive north to Fukuoka.
DAY 5 Drive back to your Tokyo hotel (a very long day of about 13 hours with breaks).

Said plainly
Ash can fall in Kagoshima. Bring sunglasses or a simple mask if you like. This tour has long driving days. The van has comfortable seats and we stop every 2 hours or so for rest areas, food and toilets. Kagoshima is about 1,300 km from Tokyo, so Day 5 is very long.
