The experience
A private journey, thoughtfully paced
Oita Prefecture has a deep Buddhist history, far from the busy onsen town of Beppu.
In Usuki, more than 60 Buddhas are carved straight into soft rock cliffs. They date from the late Heian to Kamakura periods, about 800 years ago. They are a National Treasure of Japan. You walk a path between four groups of statues, and the large head of the Dainichi Buddha looks out over the rice fields.
The Kunisaki Peninsula grew its own mix of Buddhism and Shinto. Here you visit Fukiji, whose Great Hall is the oldest wooden building in Kyushu, standing quietly in a garden of moss and trees.
You also visit Usa Jingu, the head shrine of all Hachiman shrines in Japan. Its red halls stand in a forest, and the shrine has a different prayer manner: bow twice, clap four times, bow once.
This tour is calm and slow, for people who love temples, shrines and quiet countryside.
This is a private tour. Only your group. One van, 1 to 6 people, never shared. Your driver-guide speaks English, and also Hindi and Urdu.
If the Usuki Stone Buddhas is closed or cancelled on your date, you can take a full refund of your booking, guaranteed. If you prefer, we can instead visit the stone Buddhas of Kumano Magaibutsu in Kunisaki, carved in a cliff above the forest.
