The experience
A private journey, thoughtfully paced
Uchiko in Ehime grew rich from making wax more than 100 years ago. Its main street, Yokaichi, still has white plaster merchant houses and wooden lattice windows. You walk the street with your guide and visit Kamihaga House, the home of a wax family, where you can learn how wax was made.
You also step inside Uchiko-za, a wooden kabuki theatre from 1916. You can stand on the stage, look under it at the turning stage and see the old seating boxes.
Nearby Ozu is a small castle town by the Hijikawa River. We walk its old streets and see the river view.
In Matsuyama you visit Dogo Onsen, one of the oldest hot springs in Japan. The main building, Dogo Onsen Honkan, is a famous wooden bathhouse. You bathe in the public bath like local people have for centuries. Then you ride up to Matsuyama Castle, one of the castles in Japan that still has its original keep, with wide views of the city and the sea.
This is a private tour. Only your group. One van, 1 to 6 people, never shared. Your driver-guide speaks English, and also Hindi and Urdu.
If Dogo Onsen Honkan is closed or cancelled on your date, you can take a full refund of your booking, guaranteed. If you prefer, we can instead bathe at Dogo Onsen Tsubaki-no-yu or Asuka-no-yu next door.
DAY 1 Pickup at your Tokyo hotel and drive west to Okayama (about 8 to 9 hours with breaks).
DAY 2 Cross the Seto Inland Sea bridges to Ehime. Walk Ozu old town, then on to Matsuyama.
DAY 3 Uchiko: Yokaichi street, Kamihaga House and Uchiko-za theatre. Evening bath at Dogo Onsen.
DAY 4 Matsuyama Castle in the morning, then drive back to Okayama.
DAY 5 Drive back to your Tokyo hotel (about 8 to 9 hours with breaks).

Dogo Onsen is a public bath. Bathing is without swimwear, and men and women bathe separately. Large tattoos may not be allowed in some baths. Uchiko-za can close on some days for events. If Uchiko-za is closed on your date, you can take a full refund of your booking, guaranteed. If Dogo Onsen Honkan is closed or cancelled on your date, you can take a full refund of your booking, guaranteed. If you prefer, we can instead bathe at Dogo Onsen Tsubaki-no-yu or Asuka-no-yu next door. This tour has long driving days. The van has comfortable seats and we stop every 2 hours or so for rest areas, food and toilets.

What is the cancellation policy?
Cancel at least 24 hours before departure for an automatic full refund to the original payment method. Within 24 hours, contact us directly so we can help.
