The experience
A private journey, thoughtfully paced
Munakata Taisha in Fukuoka is part of the UNESCO site Sacred Island of Okinoshima and Associated Sites. Okinoshima is a small island far in the sea where people have prayed for safe voyages for more than 1,500 years. Visitors cannot land there, so the shrine on the mainland is the place to learn its story.
At Hetsumiya, the main shrine, you walk to the main hall and up to the Takamiya altar, an outdoor prayer site in the forest. Then you visit the Shinpokan treasure hall. It holds about 80,000 objects found on Okinoshima: mirrors, gold rings and items from the old trade with Korea and China.
On another day you drive to the Itoshima Peninsula west of Fukuoka. At Sakurai Futamigaura, two rocks stand in the sea, joined by a big straw rope, with a white torii gate in the water in front. You also see the long beaches and small cafes of the coast.
This is a calm trip about faith, sea and history.
This is a private tour. Only your group. One van, 1 to 6 people, never shared. Your driver-guide speaks English, and also Hindi and Urdu.
If the Shinpokan treasure hall is closed or cancelled on your date, you can take a full refund of your booking, guaranteed. If you prefer, we can instead visit the Hetsumiya shrine grounds and Takamiya altar in more depth and add the Munakata Daijima coast.
